Spiritual Diversity Tools in Early Childhood Education

Many moons ago, this country actually had an issue with racial bigotry and prejudice. No, really, we did. I'm not suggesting that it still doesn't exist, and unfortunately in some cases it remains an extreme issue, but I am saying with confidence that the problem has been drastically reduced. Unfortunately, the more positive outlook in this area is going the wrong direction when it comes to the subject of spiritual diversity.

The challenges to educating our children on the aspect of spiritual child development™ are similar in premise to the challenges of educating them on the aspects of racial diversity, but the tools are not. Back in the day, the public school system committed time and resources to early childhood education in the area of racial stereotyping and bigotry. Books and film (8 millimeter I'm sorry to admit to) were readily available and a part of the school mandate. But the separation of church and state brings an added level of complexity to addressing the issue at hand. The argument here is that while we are discussing the different faiths, we are discussing them in the context of an adjective rather than discussing the intricacies of their faith. The reality is that you can't fight city hall, and until this issue is formerly addressed, we will be left to our own devices. But what are these devices? What tools are at our disposal to bring this so important issue to the table?

Without ever touching on the intricacies of any religion, the company espouses a message of respect, compassion and understanding amongst children of different belief systems. These messages are conveyed in beautifully illustrated children's stories that show these diverse characters working as a team as they address the challenges in their everyday affairs and adventures. The redundant imagery of these characters playing and laughing together conveys a clear message to the young viewer that playing with kids of different backgrounds really is ok.

Why More and More States Are Starting to Pay Greater Attention to Early Childhood Education Programs

Just a few years back, very few state education departments in the USA showed any willingness to devote their attention and resources to early childhood education programs. In those days, most of the attention would be focused on elementary, secondary and college education programs, leaving the early childhood system largely uncared for. The reasoning behind this was quite simple: that early childhood education didn't matter, and that resources would be better spent if devoted to the higher education systems (where output is usually more tangible and hence more quantifiable).

Fast forward to today, and we see more and states devoting considerable resources and attention to the early childhood education system. There are a number of ways through which this is manifesting. We are, for instance, seeing more and more childhood education centers being built in low income areas, to encourage parents who wouldn't otherwise put their children through ECD to do so. Many state governments are also employing more and more early child educators. And supervision for early child educators, even those not in the government payroll, is being tightened, to ensure that it is a quality education they are giving kids. In many states, we are increasingly seeing people aspiring to become early child educators being put through licensing processes. And more often than not, one of the conditions for licensure is that the person must have a good understanding of early education techniques - with quite a good number requiring aspiring ECD teachers to have degrees in the discipline.
So, the question that comes up is as to why more and more governments are paying closer attention to early childhood education.

And while several factors can be seen as being the trend where more and more state governments are paying closer attention to early education, it turns out that their efforts in that regard are mostly being informed by findings from education research. Those are findings to the effect that the quality of childhood education a person gets is one of the key determinants of that person's educational achievement over a lifetime. This is where it emerges that people who receive good quality early education tend to go on to become educational achievers, with people who receive poor quality early childhood education (or no ECD at all) going on to become non-achievers education-wise, regardless of their natural abilities. The mechanism via which this trend manifests, it seems, is via the fact that it is in the ECD system that 'attitudes to learning' are developed. It follows, then, that good ECD would develop good attitudes to learning in learners, whereas poor ECD makes them averse to learning.

Governments are increasingly becoming awake to the fact that although the results of early education may not be directly quantifiable, childhood education still has a very huge impact on the rest of the education system over the years. Thus, they become aware to the fact that devotion of resources and attention into the early childhood is, in fact, an investment into future success for the (whole) education system. Conversely, it is now widely understood that neglecting childhood education would do the whole education system a lot of harm in the longer run. That would be happening as students with poor attitudes to learning (thanks to poor early childhood education) go through the system, and probably come out of it without attaining their fullest potential.

How to Find the Best Early Childhood Education Degree Program

Early childhood education is an imperative aspect of the education field. It is no secret that young children are extremely impressionable - and any positive learning experiences that they can encounter can impact them in a substantial way. Even as advancing technology substantially changes the way that various ages of children and young people are learning, certain teaching methods and education techniques have remained the same and are still just as effective today as they were many years ago. Because studies have proven that 85% of a child's personality is developed before the young age of six, early childhood education is an imperative part of a young person's life.

Early childhood education involves the shaping of the emotional, social, physical, intellectual and cognitive skill set of a young child. Professional early childhood educators are specially trained to positively impact young children and help them grow into intelligent and effective adults. Even though primary care facilitators and a child's parents play a significant role in a child's life, early childhood instructors provide nurturing education-oriented attention to a child. Teachers should also closely involve a student's parents during a child's education to ensure that he or she receives the best and most effective type of education.

Do you wish to pursue degree program training in the early childhood development field? Do you enjoy working with young children and watching them develop? Are you patient, encouraging and kind? Can you help young students who may possess severe or mild learning disabilities? Many schools, like the McCann School of Business and Technology, offer convenient courses and hands-on classes that quickly prepare students like you for a career in early childhood education.

Students who enroll in training classes in the area of early childhood education will acquire standard degree program instruction for this important field. Once these students graduate, they are able to obtain careers in pre-schools, primary schools, day care centers and nursery schools.

Courses will teach students the basics of early childhood education. They will learn about:

Establishing a creative, encouraging and nurturing learning atmosphere.
Helping students in the classroom and at home - instructors will closely involve a student's parents and encourage parent-teacher interaction during the process of learning.
Developing age-appropriate lesson plans that are fun, educational and interactive. Instructors will place a strong emphasis on learning through ways which are fun and positive to the student.
Assisting students with special needs and learning disabilities. Students will become familiar with instruction methods that help students who may have difficulty with the learning process.
Providing any necessary care for young children, learn to focus on the emotional, social, physical and cognitive development of a child.
Collaborating with other early childhood education instructors to develop the most appropriate education plans for certain age groups.

Why Can't We Be Friends - The Role of Inter-Faith Exposure in Early Childhood Education

You don't have to look too far back in time to recognize how far our society has come in our attitudes towards racially integrated playmates. Whether it's because we are more educated and more embracing of the idea, or because we have simply been forced to this outcome as a result of the world's dynamics - probably a hybrid of the two - black children playing with white children playing with Hispanic children is now the norm rather than the exception. Twenty years ago this was not the case. I'm not so idealistic (naive?) as to suggest that the issue of racial harmony is all in the past, but we are way ahead of where we were as a society just two decades ago.

The next step in this area of early childhood education is a doozy and not for the faint hearted - spiritual diversity. Close your eyes and picture the same playground that now houses our black, white and Hispanic children. Now picture them as Christian, Muslim and Jewish - black, white or Hispanic, take your pick. What is your knee jerk reaction to this scenario? Does it invoke positive feelings, negative feelings, a sense of defensiveness, concern, confusion, or all of the above? Good, bad or indifferent - in this author's eyes it is all good - diversity is here to stay. Neighborhoods built around ethnic or faith based lines are becoming fewer and fewer and mixed marriages are becoming more commonplace. In response to the question, "How are you going to raise your children," a spiritually diverse couple that I am friendly with- the husband is Jewish and the wife is Muslim - replied with one of the greatest lines I have heard - "with lots and lots of love." Granted, the proverbial 'love conquers all' is an over simplified response to a very complex issue, but they did hit at the heart of the matter which is that they made loving their kids the priority that drives the rest of their parental decisions and actions.

At the end of the day, the converging forces of globalization, immigration, and the high value that our very own country places on diversity (see our higher learning of education system) are putting the issue of spiritual diversity front and center. Respect, compassion and understanding are not confined to racial diversity. As I said, this next step is a doozy - better that we manage it than chance it in the hands of some misguided souls.

Online Education in any field does not come cheap. Even if you only enroll for a simple bachelors program, it can still be quite a drain on your pocket. Thus when choosing an online degree,, make sure you get all the information in advance regarding the tuition cost and the courses available.

Scheduling plays an equally important part when it comes to studying at home. It can be worked out to make the time to study so a supportive partner is something to cherish. Though it will be stressful, tiring, and eat into what is probably little free time, the rewards far outweigh the effort. If you have a young family, you will be able to associate what you study with what you see.

Should you not decide to enrol ask yourself this question: Will you ever get the chance to do something as amazing without a degree of this kind. If the answer is no, perhaps you should reconsider your options.

Early Childhood Education Training - An Exciting Opportunity

Early childhood teachers teach and care for young children in early childhood education (ECE) facilities such as kindergartens, kohanga reo or education and care centres. If you are considering ECE training then you should expect to graduate as a well rounded individual equipped with the skills you need to care for young children. You should expect to gain a thorough foundation in theories of teaching and learning, child development, and working with children and families in New Zealand. Some of the activities and responsibilities you should expect to take on include planning daily programmes, learning experiences and routines and implementing Te Whariki, the early childhood curriculum.

You will educate and care for babies and children, working one to one or in groups as well as assessing and recording the learning and development of each child. Discussing children's progress with their parents or caregivers, whanau and other education professionals and making or adapting learning resources is also another important role you would fulfil. It is important that you maintain the lines of contact with parents, caregivers and whanau so you will run workshops and attend social gatherings and huis. You will also take care of logistics such as preparing budgets, ordering supplies and helping manage the centre.

Early childhood teachers need to have teaching skills and knowledge of different teaching strategies and learning styles so they can provide a well-rounded education to the young children. Through an early childhood education training program you will gain knowledge about Te Whariki, the early childhood curriculum and knowledge of child learning and development and of early literacy and numeracy. Good communication skills and the ability to interact well with children and adults from a range of cultures are absolutely essential. Through the program you will also learn administration and report-writing skills, organisational, problem-solving and decision-making skills and you will have knowledge of first aid.

As an ECE teacher there are certain personal qualities that need to be apparent such as the ability to be understanding and patient and firm but fair when situations get a little demanding. You also need to be creative, imaginative, resourceful, adaptable and able to make quick decisions. If you are focusing in working in a kohanga reo you need to be committed to the kohanga reo kaupapa. Being an early childhood educator can be an amazing job as you will have the skills and opportunity to help young children cultivate a love of learning and make a difference to their lives.
